Why Innovate With Mount Sinai?
At Mount Sinai, we innovate every day. Our faculty, students, staff, and strategic external partners are all empowered with the tools needed to translate research from bench to bedside in an innovative and entrepreneurial culture.
More Support, Less Red Tape
At Mount Sinai, innovation is an integral part of our culture. Our combined research and clinical capabilities under a single enterprise reduce bureaucracy and create an agile community where innovators can develop, test, and commercialize their work.
A Proven History of Innovation and Commercialization
From the discovery of human blood groups and universal blood donors by Reuben Ottenberg, MD, in 1908 to the recent development of a semiquantitative COVID-19 antibody test, Mount Sinai has a history of developing visionary health care innovations. We file over 200+ patents per year.
Intellectual Capital and the Resources to Support It
Our 43,000-plus employee innovators are supported by Mount Sinai’s eight hospital campuses, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and 500-plus multidisciplinary centers, institutes, programs, and laboratories. Our community invests in the infrastructure that drives innovation. In 2006, our Global Health and Emerging Pathogens Institute began operating the Emerging Pathogens Facility, including an enhanced BSL-3 laboratory, which proved invaluable as we worked to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

Results
Mount Sinai inventors have made great strides in diagnostics and therapeutics, including revolutionary advances in medical devices and software. Additionally, technologies developed in our laboratories are powering some of the most groundbreaking startup companies in the world.
Over the last several years, we have added more than a dozen centers and institutes to deliver these innovations faster and more efficiently. This includes the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health, the first such department established by any medical school in the United States.
